Booking travel in Bangladesh online: what the big OTAs miss

Book a business hotel in Gulshan on an international booking site and it works perfectly. Live rates, instant confirmation, free cancellation, a map, four hundred reviews. There is no reason to use anything else.

Now try to book two nights on a houseboat on Tanguar Haor. Or a launch ticket to Hatiya. Or a resort in Sajek that isn't one of the four that pay for distribution. Or a tourist visa for Thailand with a Bangladeshi passport. The same site is useless for all four, and not because it's badly built — because none of that inventory has ever been connected to it.

That gap is where most trips inside Bangladesh actually live. This is a guide to booking the things the big platforms don't carry, and to the checks worth running before you send anyone money.

Why the international OTAs stop working at the city limits

It isn't a conspiracy, it's economics. A global OTA connects to inventory through channel managers — the software a hotel runs to publish its rooms and rates to twenty sites at once. If a property doesn't run one, it effectively doesn't exist to that OTA.

Channel managers cost money and need a full-time person who understands them. A 200-room chain hotel in Dhaka clears that bar easily. A twelve-cabin houseboat operator whose peak season is four months long does not, and never will. The economics don't work at that scale, and no amount of platform growth changes it.

So the inventory splits into two worlds:

• Connected inventory — chain and mid-size city hotels. Well served by the big platforms. Genuinely competitive prices.
• Unconnected inventory — houseboats, hill resorts, eco-cottages, launch and ship operators, small beach properties, seasonal camps. Sold by phone, WhatsApp and Facebook page. Frequently the more interesting half of the trip.

Everyone who has planned a Sundarbans or Saint Martin trip knows the second world. It's the one where you end up messaging a number a friend forwarded you, sending a bKash advance, and hoping.

The five things you can't book on an international site

1. Houseboats

Tanguar Haor houseboat tours are typically sold as packages — one night, two days, full board, a named boat with its own cabin count and layout. Nothing about that fits a room-night model, which is why they never appear. Boats vary enormously: air-conditioned cabins versus fan, attached bath versus shared, a cook on board versus meals arranged ashore. 2. Ship and launch tickets

Coastal and river routes — Saint Martin, Hatiya, Barishal — run on schedules that shift with season, weather and, for Saint Martin in particular, current regulations on visitor numbers and permitted operating months. Because the schedule isn't stable, the inventory is hard to publish, so it mostly isn't. 3. Hill and eco resorts

Sajek, Bandarban, Rangamati and Sreemangal have excellent properties that will never appear on a global site. Some are genuinely small. Some are in areas where access requires paperwork or a guide. Nearly all of them are booked by phone.

4. Anything priced properly in taka

Even where a local property does appear internationally, the price is frequently worse than what the property itself would quote — the distribution commission has to come from somewhere. For domestic travel, booking closer to the source is usually cheaper, not more expensive. This is the opposite of the instinct most travellers have.

5. Visas

Visa processing isn't inventory at all, so no booking platform models it. It's a service with a queue, a document checklist and a status. For a Bangladeshi passport holder, the visa is often the hardest part of the trip and the part with the least visibility — which is why it usually ends up as a WhatsApp thread with an agent.

How to book each one without getting burned

Houseboats

Ask for the boat's name, not just the operator's. Confirm cabin type (AC or fan), whether the bathroom is attached, how many people share the boat, whether meals are included, and the exact boarding point — Tahirpur and Sunamganj are not the same place and the transfer between them is not trivial.

Get the cancellation terms in writing before paying. Haor season is weather-dependent, and "what happens if the trip can't sail" is the single question most likely to go badly.

Ship tickets

Book the return leg at the same time as the outbound. On the Saint Martin route in particular, the return is the one that strands people. Confirm the operator's name and the sailing time, and keep the ticket reference somewhere that works offline — mobile data on the islands is unreliable.

Hill resorts

Confirm what the road access is at the time of year you're going, and whether the property arranges the last leg. In Sajek, the convoy timing is a real constraint, not a detail. Ask whether the quoted rate includes meals — many hill properties are effectively full-board because there's nowhere else to eat.

Visas

Whoever handles it, insist on three things: a written document checklist up front, a named person accountable for the file, and a status you can check without phoning. If a provider can't tell you what stage your file is at, they don't have a process — they have a pile.
